Timelines/Requirements to Becoming a Surrogate
Surrogacy Research – 1 MONTH to 6 MONTHS
- Candidate researches online.
- Talk to experienced surrogates.
REQUIREMENTS TO BE A SURROGATE MOTHER:
- 21-to-40-year-old.
- 18-32 BMI.
- Be a citizen, resident, or immigrant.
- Live in a surrogate-friendly state.
- Not government-funded.
- Must have and raise a child.
- Provide OB/GYN records and a clearance letter.
- Nonsmoker in a nonsmoking home. No criminal history, no felony convictions.
- No drugs.
- Mental illness-free.
- No antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds in the past year.
- The Surrogate and husband/partner must allow background checks.
- Surrogate and Partner eager to get therapy.
- Travel for surrogacy appointments overnights.
- Must agree to home visits with all residents and pets.
- Six months since previous vaginal or cesarean birth; OB/GYN documents, clearance letter required.

MEDICAL SCREENING – 1 WEEK to 4 WEEKS
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION WILL TAKE 1 WEEK TO 2 WEEKS
Schedule an IVF clinic visit with the doctor, who will review surrogacy requirements. Clinic-to-clinic, the workup includes:
- Vaginal ultrasonography — a probe is inserted to search for polyps, scar tissue, and lining thickness.
- Hysteroscopy uses a tiny camera to see inside the uterus.
- IVF, injections, medicines, and embryo transfer instructions.
